How to get internet and stay connected in Istanbul: local SIM, roaming, Wi-Fi?

If traveling to Istanbul by ferry from Sochi, mobile signal is almost completely lost for about a day while at sea and returns as you get closer to shore.

A Turkish eSIM bought in advance can be paid for and activated at any time — just turn it on in your phone settings right after landing in Istanbul.

A Turkish e-SIM can be used to register on the Passo ticketing platform. SMS messages are delivered as long as the plan includes them, even if you're physically outside Turkey.

If you need a SIM that also works in Russia, check with the carrier beforehand — not all Turkish SIM cards include international roaming.

Free public Wi-Fi in Istanbul almost always requires SMS verification. If your SIM doesn't receive SMS, buy a different local SIM card that supports incoming messages.

MTS (Russian carrier) offers roaming in Istanbul — both data and calls work. A convenient option if you'd rather not buy a local SIM.

To call Russia from Istanbul, all major messengers work: Telegram, WhatsApp, VKontakte. If the person in Russia doesn't have a VPN, VKontakte or Max calls are the most reliable options.

The easiest way to get internet upon arriving in Turkey is to buy a local SIM card from one of the main carriers: Turkcell, Vodafone, or Türk Telekom — available at the airport and throughout the city.
