Which banks in Istanbul accept UnionPay cards for cash withdrawal and payments?

Cash withdrawals at VakıfBank, Ziraat, and Türkiye İş Bankası ATMs with UnionPay cards are free of ATM fees.

According to RSHB (Rosselkhozbank): UnionPay cash withdrawals work at Garanti BBVA, İş Bankası, Akbank, Ziraat, and VakifBank ATMs. Payments at POS terminals work at the same five banks. Generally works at newer terminals — pharmacies, chain stores, and Topkapi area.

TEB (Türk Ekonomi Bankası) and QNB Finansbank do not accept UnionPay — neither at ATMs nor at payment terminals. If a transaction fails, try an ATM from one of the five supported banks.

Some Istanbul ATMs display a 'yabancı' (foreigner) message when tapping a contactless card. Unlike ATMs in Asia, Turkish machines may not support contactless reading for foreign cards. Insert the card with the chip instead.

Opening a Turkish bank account with a residence permit but no local employment is difficult. Ziraat Bank reportedly refuses in this case. It's worth trying Garanti BBVA or İş Bankası, as each bank has its own requirements.

Russian banking apps (Sber, Alfa) work inconsistently in Turkey. Check access before traveling. Have cash or an alternative transfer method ready in case the app is unavailable.

Old or worn US dollar bills are not exchanged at Istanbul Airport. Try city-centre banks or exchange offices (döviz bürosu) — they are more flexible with older banknotes than airport counters.
