TL;DR

Use a nol card for Dubai Metro and RTA buses; it can be bought and topped up at Metro stations. Take the Red Line to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall for Dubai Mall, while Dubai Outlet Mall normally requires a bus connection or a shopping shuttle.

Buy a nol card from a machine or ticket office at a Metro station for travel from Dubai Marina. Tap in and out on the Metro, and also tap when boarding and leaving an RTA bus.

For Dubai Mall, take the Metro Red Line from Dubai Marina to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station. The covered Dubai Mall Metro Link connects the station with the mall.

Dubai Outlet Mall is not directly on the Metro, so plan on an RTA bus connection or a shopping shuttle after the train. A small hotel shuttle can be slow because it may stop at several hotels; travelers reported that advance booking was not always necessary.
