TL;DR
You only need to file a customs declaration if carrying more than $5,000 USD (or equivalent) in cash, more than 15,000,000 VND, or over 300g of gold jewelry — otherwise no paper or e-declaration is required.
As of July 2026 many travelers are confused about which declarations are mandatory on arrival — most tourists don't need to fill in anything unless they exceed the currency or gold limits.
Cash limit: amounts over $5,000 USD (or the equivalent in another currency) must be declared on arrival.
A declaration is also required if you're carrying more than 15,000,000 VND in cash.
For gold jewelry, the declaration threshold is over 300g per person.
Since 2023, Vietnam scrapped the mandatory paper customs/health declaration for regular tourists — it's only required at the airport customs counter if you exceed the limits above.
