TL;DR
In August, the north (Hanoi, Ha Long) and central coast (Da Nang) are in their best season. The south (Ho Chi Minh City, Nha Trang) is in rainy season. By September–October, the south improves but central Vietnam gets wetter.
August is peak season for northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Ha Long Bay) and the central coast (Da Nang, Hoi An) — sunny skies and warm sea. The south (Ho Chi Minh City, Nha Trang) is in its rainy season during August.
In mid-July, Da Nang is a better choice than Nha Trang: the central coast is still in dry season, while Nha Trang already sees significant rainfall. Da Nang in July is ideal for beach holidays.
Ha Long Bay in mid-July is generally accessible, but typhoon and fog risks exist. Combining a day cruise with a 23:00 Hanoi flight the same evening is technically possible but risky due to potential weather delays or traffic. Booking the flight for the next day is the safer option.
Starting a Vietnam trip from Ho Chi Minh City in autumn: September is still technically rainy season in the south, but showers are usually short and don't ruin sightseeing. By October, rains ease and conditions become more comfortable. Both months work fine as a starting point.
For a 1.5–2 month north-to-south (or reverse) itinerary in autumn, note that central Vietnam (Hoi An, Hue, Da Nang) enters its rainy and typhoon season in October–November. Plan the central region for September and save the south for October–November.
