Healthcare in Vietnam for travelers and expats: clinics, costs, and what to do when sick

When sick in Vietnam, you have two main options: local public hospitals are very cheap but have long queues and little English spoken. International clinics like FV Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City or Vinmec in Hanoi are expensive but offer English-speaking staff and high service standards. Travel insurance is strongly recommended.

Vietnamese pharmacies sell a wide range of medications without a prescription, including antibiotics and antihistamines. For sore throat and cough, pharmacists typically recommend herbal-based local remedies or standard antihistamines. Drug prices are very low compared to Europe.

Antidepressants such as fluoxetine are technically prescription-only in Vietnam. In practice, some pharmacies may sell them without a prescription, but this is not guaranteed. The safest route is to consult a psychiatrist at an international clinic to obtain a valid prescription.

A doctor's visit at a local public clinic costs as little as 50,000–200,000 VND (roughly $2–8 USD). At international clinics, an initial consultation starts at $50–150 USD or more. Lab tests and procedures are also significantly cheaper than in Europe, especially at local hospitals.

Long-stay travelers and expats are advised to arrange international health insurance before arriving. Local insurance options for foreigners exist but offer limited coverage. Without insurance, treatment at an international clinic can become very expensive.

For minor ailments like colds, coughs, or stomach issues, locals often go straight to a pharmacy. Pharmacists are knowledgeable and can recommend appropriate medication. In tourist areas, many pharmacies have English-speaking staff.
