Can you make phone calls with an eSIM in Nha Trang, Vietnam — does Wi-Fi calling (VoWiFi) work?

A data-only eSIM and an eSIM with a number are different products. In September 2026 a traveler asked how text messages would arrive on a Vietnamese SIM or eSIM without a number. Participants replied that mobile service and mobile data are separate services, so such a card will not receive SMS. One traveler said she received texts on her home SIM, which she kept connected in Vietnam, while her eSIM was for data only.

An eSIM in Vietnam does not have to be data-only: local operators offer options with a Vietnamese phone number. For regular calls and SMS, choose a plan that explicitly includes a local number, whether buying in advance or after arrival, rather than a data-only eSIM.

You can buy a Vietnam eSIM in advance on Trip.com by searching the app for “eSIM Vietnam.” Viettel is recommended as the local operator; after payment, buyers typically receive setup instructions and an automatic-installation link. Activate the eSIM only after arriving in Vietnam.

Some eSIM services sell regional packages rather than single-country ones. In August 2026 a traveler said she had bought an eSIM through the Kaspersky app for China, and when she went to buy one for Vietnam, the app offered to top up the existing eSIM instead. She assumed the package covers a region wider than one country and suggested confirming this with the service's support.
