TL;DR
Ras Abu Galum gets more praise for fish variety and fewer crowds, while the Blue Hole is more popular with divers but tends to be crowded.
The sea in Dahab is described as clean and calm, comfortable even for people usually squeamish about swimming in the sea.
At one well-known local spot you might get lucky and encounter a dolphin — one traveler spent about 35 minutes swimming with one early morning in May (a moray eel was nearby too).
Ras Abu Galum left a strong impression with an incredible variety of fish and almost no crowds — an hour of snorkeling there felt like being inside a National Geographic documentary. Water is cooler in January. The Blue Hole was less impressive by comparison — better suited for divers and much more crowded.
