TL;DR
July and August fall in the Maldives wet season, but rain is typically brief and doesn't ruin a trip. Expect lower prices, fewer crowds, and plenty of sunshine between showers.
July is worth visiting — rain showers are short (typically 20–30 minutes) and the sun comes out for most of the day. Many travelers choose this period specifically for lower hotel prices.
August is technically monsoon season, but rain usually falls in the evening or at night. Daytime is generally fine for swimming and sunbathing.
Traveling with a child in July is fine — atoll lagoons are sheltered from waves, water is warm (29–30°C), and jellyfish are rarely an issue. Choose a resort with its own shallow lagoon for kids.
The wet season runs roughly May to October, peaking in June–July. Even so, the Maldives averages around 6–7 hours of sunshine per day during this period.
Upsides of visiting in July–August: flights and resorts are noticeably cheaper than peak season (December–April), and beaches are less crowded. Downside: seas can be rougher and snorkeling visibility may be reduced.
