TL;DR
Late May the water is still cool but swimmable. By early June it becomes comfortable, and by late June it's warm enough for long sessions with snorkeling.
In Gümbet bay from late May to early June the water was still cool but swimmable. The first few days felt like a cold shock, but within a minute it was fine. By the last days of the first week of June the water had warmed noticeably and people were swimming much longer.
In Kadıkalesi in late June the water was warm enough to snorkel for over an hour after lunch. Plenty of fish and great visibility — easy to lose track of time.
In Çolaklı in May, strong waves consistently rolled in every afternoon, throwing and injuring swimmers. Swimming was impossible and people had to watch from the shore. May can be a risky month for swimming in this area.
