Is Side beach safe for kids — water entry, depth, and waves?

Based on 1 discussion with 3 participants · Last activity: today

TL;DR

Side has a gradual sandy seabed, but the first few meters near shore are coarse gravel. The sea can be rough in June; September is calmer. Generally suitable for children.

What the community said

One visitor noted a comfortable kids' entry spot is left of the beach entrance, opposite the last row of sunbeds; the seabed there isn't gradual — depth starts after just 3-5 meters. Their child struggled entering barefoot the first day due to stones, and water shoes helped.

Another visitor described the entry along most of the coast from old Side toward Antalya as 'silky' — a smooth but fairly quick increase in depth, with a narrow shallow strip (10-15 steps) for those who want to sit at the water's edge. Near stream outlets there can be stones and murky water, but elsewhere it's sandy. Water clarity depends on time of day: clear in the morning and near sunset, murky near shore until the first buoy line at midday, occasional cold currents toward evening, and sometimes small debris (twigs, petals) drifts in with the wind.

One family with an older child (age 10) stopped entering from the beach and now swims exclusively from the pier, where rocky/pebbly seabed conditions no longer matter.

At Side beach, the shoreline starts with fine pebbles, then roughly 3 meters of coarse, sharp gravel before reaching good sand. No dedicated children's zone was spotted — there is a family zone and an adults-only (16+) zone.

today ~3 meters of gravel before sand

From mid-June the sea in Side can be rough most days, making it intimidating to swim out far. However, the entry is very gradual with fine sand and a slow increase in depth — a plus for young children.

In September it is very manageable to walk 6 km along the shoreline to Side with a 9-year-old — paddling at the water's edge the whole way. Kids can collect shells and spot small crabs. Near Side itself the beach is blocked, so you walk the promenade. The bus is a convenient way back.
