Is it safe to leave your phone and belongings unattended on Da Nang beaches?

TL;DR

No reports of phone/bag snatching by force in Da Nang, but petty theft of unattended belongings on the beach has increased recently — a few years ago you could leave your phone under a towel safely, now it's better not to risk it.

What the community said

One visitor reported that on their very first visit to the beach, they witnessed a girl having something stolen and chasing after the thief. In the evening, many young men dressed entirely in black were seen on the beach, suspiciously looking around.

When asked directly whether it's safe to leave phones/valuables unattended on the city beaches, no one confirmed it's safe — the question itself reflects growing concern about theft.

No cases of phones or bags being physically snatched from people's hands on the street were reported in Da Nang — this type of street robbery isn't typical here compared to other destinations.

Theft is a fairly new problem in Da Nang — a few years back tourists could leave a phone on top of their clothes on the beach while swimming and nobody would touch it.

As a general regional warning: serious theft can happen even to experienced travelers — a tourist from Saudi Arabia reportedly had belongings worth around €19,000 stolen, though the thief was later caught.
