TL;DR
For a short trip, a budget hotel works fine since you'll mostly be out exploring. For longer stays, it's better to find an apartment on the ground after spending a week or two in a hotel first.
After one trip, the conclusion was clear: a hotel in Nha Trang is unnecessary — apartments are the better choice for repeat visitors.
A standard premium room (~30 sq m, 2 double beds, sea view, bathtub) is comfortable enough: AC, fridge, safe, great Wi-Fi, daily housekeeping around 3 PM, and a decent breakfast. No private balcony, but a shared corridor balcony is available. Fine if you don't expect 5-star service.
Avoid booking long-term accommodation remotely based on reviews alone — it may disappoint in person. Better to check into a cheap hotel for 1–2 weeks and search for housing on the ground.
In Cam Ranh, guests can freely visit neighboring hotels' beaches and pools. From Movenpick, it's easy to walk to Radisson and Duyen Ha. Movenpick has the best beach and kids' water slides; Duyen Ha has stunning grounds and villas worth trying on a return visit.
Tour operators may warn that independent hotel booking in Cam Ranh is pointless — claiming everything is full or double charges apply. In reality, Booking.com and TripAdvisor work fine, and same-day or 2–3 days in advance bookings are perfectly viable.
A key feature to look for when booking a hotel in Nha Trang: a proper balcony with a table and chairs for evening drinks. Hotels without a balcony are a dealbreaker for many.
In Nha Trang you'll spend almost all your time outdoors — the hotel is just for sleeping. There's no point overpaying; a budget but clean hotel is all you need.
