TL;DR
Water shoes aren't needed on the beach itself, but are recommended when entering the water due to rocks and coral on the shallow seabed.
Go for trusted water-shoe brands (e.g. Bilikin or Coral) rather than cheap unknown ones like Fansan — the price difference is minimal, but quality and reliability are much better.
Some travelers wear special 'coral shoes' the whole trip — footwear with a rubberized sole and fabric upper. They don't get slippery or hot to wear.
Pack water shoes or closed-toe Crocs for Hurghada. The shallow seabed has rocks and coral, making protective footwear much more comfortable and safer when wading.
Walking on the beach barefoot is fine, but water shoes are advisable when entering the shallow water. Kids often manage without them, but adults may find the rocky bottom uncomfortable. Many people leave their shoes in the room and regret it.
Water shoes protect you, but keep in mind they don't make it okay to step on coral reefs — doing so damages the ecosystem regardless of footwear. Beach staff actively remind tourists not to walk on the reefs.
