TL;DR
If a regular snorkel tube feels uncomfortable or won't stay in your mouth, you can freedive by holding your breath instead, or try a full-face mask - though it only lets you float and watch from the surface, not dive down.
A full-face snorkel mask keeps water out of the breathing tube, but it also acts like a float, keeping you on the surface. You can only watch from above - diving down isn't possible with it.
Some people struggle to properly grip a standard snorkel mouthpiece due to jaw or teeth shape, which causes water to leak in.
One diving instructor suggested simply removing the snorkel tube and freediving by holding your breath instead - this worked better than using the tube for some.
