TL;DR
Late August–early September in Da Nang is usually still fine, with short evening showers; the real rainy/typhoon season starts closer to October-November. Cam Ranh (Nha Trang area) tends to be drier than Da Nang in September.
For a late August/early September trip there's no need to cancel: you can still visit Marble Mountains, Ba Na Hills, walk near Dragon Bridge and swim at My Khe Beach — rain isn't constant yet at this time.
By the very end of September Da Nang can already catch the start of the rainy season: rain becomes longer-lasting and early tropical storms are possible, so it's worth keeping a flexible schedule and checking the forecast before departure.
Cam Ranh (Nha Trang) tends to be drier and more weather-stable in September compared to Da Nang, so if a reliable beach holiday is the priority, this destination is less likely to be hit by rain during this period.
Flying to Da Nang in late September isn't a bad idea, but be ready for changeable weather: there can be sunny days as well as sudden downpours, especially in the afternoon.
