Is there a language barrier in Da Nang Vietnam — do locals speak English?

Locals historically have little motivation to learn English, and without Vietnamese you can run into real communication barriers, especially outside tourist hotspots.

Some locals in everyday tourist-facing situations have limited education and struggle to communicate even in their native language. In these cases, Google Translate directly into Vietnamese is the most effective tool.

On boat tours (e.g. island snorkeling trips), guides technically speak English but are very hard to understand due to the strong accent. Expect little useful commentary. Tour groups often include Russian-speaking travelers, so communication within the group is usually fine.
